A study published in the May 2003 issue of the peer-reviewed Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research, showed a strong link between the resolution of infertility and the initiation of chiropractic care.  The study consisted of a retrospective review of 14 separate articles of 15 women suffering with infertility.  In each of these cases chiropractic care was introduced and the results were documented and published.

The studies followed 15 female subjects ranging in age from 22 to 65.  The prior pregnancy history of these women revealed 11 of them had never gotten pregnant.

Two of the women had prior successful unassisted pregnancies.  One woman had an assisted pregnancy, while 1 had a history of a miscarriage. In this group 9 women had previous treatment for infertility before starting chiropractic and 4 were actually undergoing infertility treatment when they started chiropractic care.

The study noted the huge expense of infertility treatment options currently used by many couples noting the range of expenses can easily go into the thousands.  The article also noted that in vitro fertilization has shown evidence of long term risks.  A study published in November 2002 in the online version of the American Journal of Human Genetics reported that “babies conceived by in vitro fertilization may be at increased risk for a rare genetic disorder that predisposes them to cancer”.

The chiropractic care rendered to the women lsted in this study was from a variety of chiropractors using a variety of techniques.  The focus of the care in these cases was correction of vertebral subluxations.  The research article defined Subluxation by using the agreed definition of the Association of Chiropractic Colleges.  Subluxation, as defined by the Association of Chiropractic Colleges, is a “complex of functional and / or structural and / or pathological articular changes that compromise neural integrity and may influence organ system function and general health".  The study noted that all of the women in these studies, who were struggling with infertility, had evidence of nerve system interference, as detected by the presence of subluxations.

The results of these individual case studies showed that even though many of these women had tried unsuccessfully for some time to become pregnant, all of the women in this study eventually became pregnant somewhere between 2 months and 20 months of the onset of chiropractic care.  One of the case studies was summed up by the author, Elizabeth Anderson-Peacock, DC, DICCP,  "Although chiropractic care is not a treatment for infertility, it is postulated that improvement of spinal neural integrity through specific chiropractic adjustments may have contributed to improved homeostasis and physiological adaptation thus allowing the body to express a greater level of health as an outcome."

Chiropractic, Olympics and Elite Athletes...

10/16/2010

If you’ve ever had an Olympic dream, you know about all of the hard work and training it takes to get to the Games. The same holds true for members of the medical staff. Olympic-caliber athletes need medical care in the unfortunate event of an injury, but they also need help pushing their bodies to perform at their maximum potential. Doctors of chiropractic who specialize in sports injuries and physical fitness are the ideal practitioners to provide that care, being uniquely equipped to handle both injury and recovery treatment, as well as to help athletes prepare for the competition. And the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) agrees.

Since the 1980 Games when Team USA’s chiropractor was choses for the Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, N.Y., DCs have been included on the U.S. Medical Team. In 2008, a record number of four chiropractors were sent to Beijing, China, with Team USA for the Summer Games. There were approximately 600 athletes to care for on the U.S. team. This winter, the USOC will take five DCs to Vancouver, Canada, for the 2010 Olympics. They’ll have about 200 athletic competitors to work with.

“Chiropractors have really come a long way in terms of the Olympic Games,” says Michael Reed, DC, MS, DACBSP, medical director for the USOC. “And the demands of athletes are one of the main reasons why.”

Simply put, elite athletes are asking for chiropractic treatment. Sports-focused DCs are able to treat pain and injury with spinal manipulation, but they are also trained in many other modalities that help athletes avoid injury and prepare their bodies for competition—including taping, icing and stretching, explains Dr. Reed. At the 2008 Summer Games, for example, the U.S. beach volleyball team requested that Ernest Ferrel, MA, DC, CCSP, serve as the medical staff member to accompany them to their matches.

“These athletes are used to receiving chiropractic care at their home training centers because they know that it helps them to perform at their top level,” Dr. Toto says. “Since we’ll all be there for about a month, the athletes will need someone to continue their regular chiropractic routine.” In addition to maintenance and performance care, Dr. Toto will also be available for acute-injury treatment.

Richard Robinson, DC, CSCS, who practices in Calgary, Canada, will attend the Olympics with the Canadian team and work with the freestyle skiing, speed skating, women’s ice hockey and alpine ski teams. “I wasn’t hired by the Canadian team just to treat injuries,” he says. “I was hired because the team recognized the value in what I do to make them go faster and perform better. If we plan to treat injuries after they’ve happened, we’re already too late; we need to get to the Olympics performing our absolute best.”

Competition actually begins a week prior to the opening ceremonies, and Dr. Robinson will be moving into the Olympic Village in the first week of February. “I’ll spend time working in the clinic in the village, but I’ll also be onsite for every training session and competition for speed skating and freestyle skiing,” he says. Luckily, the speed skating events will take place in the mornings, while freestyle will be under the lights in the evenings.

Greg Uchacz, DC, FCCSS(C), CSCS, who practices in Calgary, Canada, will also be a part of the Canadian medical staff. He will focus on the bobsled and skeleton teams and was chosen because of athlete requests. He, too, will prepare the athletes, rather than just treat their injuries. “As DCs, we focus on ensuring that the athletes are performing to their optimum biomechanical function,” he explains. “If you think about athletes as racecars, we are essentially fine-tuning them all the way through training. I’ll be present at competition time, helping to make sure the athletes are in ideal condition by stimulating nervous system responses and stretching, among other things. I’m the last person they’ll interact with before stepping onto the course,” Dr. Uchacz continues.

How They Got There
As an athlete, you can’t just sign up to compete at the Olympic Games. It takes years and years of training, and you must prove your skills at Olympic trials or team try-outs. The same holds true for doctors of chiropractic who want to work at the event. The road to the Olympics is a long one, and it often requires relationship building, as well as physical training.

To be considered for inclusion on the U.S. medical staff, DCs must first go through the USOC’s Sports Medicine Volunteer Program—a 15-day rotation at one of the U.S. Olympic Training Centers, in which they treat any athletes that need rehab or long-term care. (DCs can apply for a volunteer position by logging onto
www.teamusa.org/medical.)

K.I.S.S. Syndrome in Newborn Babies and Chiropractic

KISS Syndrome
The brain develops tremendous during the first 5 years of life; proper sensory input is important of its development and result in normal motor function. Upper cervical misalignment at birth severely affects the verticalization of the body and development of brain and motor function. This is called KISS (Kinematic Imbalance due to Suboccipital Strain).

The infant may show only minor symptoms in the early months of their lives, e.g. a temporary fixation of the head in one position, and may 'recover' spontaneously.

Major signs and symptoms:
  • Tilted posture of the head, torticollis
  • Head held in extension, unable to lie on the back
  • Uniform sleeping posture; the child cries if the mother tries to change its position
  • Asymmetric motor patterns, asymmetric posture of trunk and extremities
  • Asymmetry of cranium, swelling of one side of the facial soft tissues

Associated signs and symptoms:
  • Sleeping disorders; the baby wakes up crying every hour
  • Extreme sensitivity of the neck
  • Asymmetries of the gluteal muscles
  • Asymmetric development and range of movement of the hips
  • Colic with no known reason
  • Constantly crying and visible discomfort without apparent infection
  • Fever of unknown origin, lack of appetite

This is a correctable syndrome, and when caught early can leave no permanent effect to the child's normal neurological development.  Please seek the help of a pediatric chiropractor for any further questions.

Treatment
Manual therapy is a craft and therefore dependent on the individual. The soft correlation between manual findings and clinical symptoms make it more difficult to see the causal connection, even more so as these symptoms can be dealt with using different methods.
The manual adjustment is the most common, followed by an instrument adjustment.  This removes the neurological stress, re-balances the muscles and normal head position.  Usually a dramatic change can be seen directly after the appropriate adjustment has been given.

Search for Health

10/10/2010

Everyone is on a search for something.  This search can take years, decades, or mere seconds to find.  Most people at one time in their life will be on the search for health.  This can be one of the most frustrating searches of your life.  Why?  When looking for healing or cures the search is never foud outside of you.  While you may be looking for "cures" or "prevention" or "management", these are all done when the process in out of control.  Prevent the reoccurance of cancer, pain management, and finding the cure, all are very common staments in the health field.  While on this journey to find health outside of the body, the defecincy that we are looking for is still a compounding defeciency.  Still on the downward slope towards sickkness and disease.  Health and Wellness is defined as 100% physical, mental, social and spirtual well-being, holositc health to every cell in the body.  This is what we are searching for.  While at this moment in history we have not one medical procedure that provides this 'health' benifit of 100%, we do know the answer to the question.  'What controls the function of every cell organ and tissue?'  The brain, yes the master control systme of the body, is extended into the body as the spinal cord and nerves that connect every cell to the brain.

Knowing this and understanding this and the implications of this fact as well as the philosphical tennet that the brain contains an intelligence that is able to cooridante the functions of the organism and maitain it in existence, we can extrapulate a well defined model for wellness.  Wellness and the expression of 100% life and intelligence to every cell.  Philosphy start with one true statement that cannot be refuted, then builds on this tennat.  Chiropractic philosophy starts with the tennent that their is an intelligence that is in all living things that controls the actions and functions and maitians this in existence.  This statemnt is a truth that cannot be refuted.

The second principal of chiropracitc is that this inborn intellignce is transmitted throught the nevers and can be interferred with.  We know this to be true because of spinal truama and paralysis that insues.  But traumas less than total paralysis can also be possible, this is a Vertebral Subluxation, that interfereces with the life force and intellignce that is present in the body and transmitted throught the brain and nervous tissue.  Decreasing lif, function, body chemistry, and natural rhytims of the body creating dis-ease or illness.

Chiropractic assess the function of the nervous systme throught the funciton of the spine and corrects this impingement of nerves by the chiropracdtic adjustment.  This gentle and specific adjusmtne is releases the tension that is stored in the muscles and tendons releasing the healing potential of the body to self-correct and heal.  This is the one goal and the one treatment that is delivered by the chiropractor.  Allowing you to end your search for wellness out side of your body and find it within.

Essentail compontents of life are a clear connection of the nervous system.  A congruent diet consisting of fresh and natural comonents of natural, which must provide nutrients for rebuilding of cellular components.  Daily moments that are congurent with the requirments of life and cardiovascular health, nutient transfer and waste removal.  This is all complimented by a positive mental attitued and joy for your life and existence here and now.  The search for the basic challenges include maintaining a certain body structure that is congruent with your lifestyle and physical demands including muscle mass, weight and body shape.  Maintaining and energy level that allows you to complete daily requirments for work, school and mental focus.  Providing essentail nutrients needed to provide proper body chemestry and rebuilding of new and damages tissue provided by an innate congruent diet and proper supplimentation.
